Mass Save Logo

Mass Save® is an initiative sponsored by Massachusetts’ natural gas and electric utilities and energy efficiency service providers. It is their goal to provide resident and business customers who manage their energy use and related costs with multiple incentives.

If you are looking to save money on energy costs and reduce consumption, upgrading your residential or commercial lighting the LED lights and fixtures is the smartest, most affordable way to go!

The following business incentive programs are available to business and residential consumers in Massachusetts that are customers of the following Program Administrators:

Berkshire Gas
Cape Light Compact
Columbia Gas of Massachusetts
Eversource
National Grid
Liberty Utilities
Unitil

Residential Lighting Incentives

Light Bulbs and Fixtures
If you are looking for ways to instantly cut energy costs in your home, upgrading your traditional bulbs and fixtures to ENERGY STAR certified LED bulbs and fixtures is a simple solution! Each bulb you replace can save you more than $100 in energy costs over the LED bulb’s lifetime, which could end up putting hundreds of dollars back into your pocket if you switched over all of the bulbs in your home.

Business Lighting Incentives

Electricity is a significant operating cost in existing buildings. By upgrading lighting and lighting fixtures, owners can not only decrease energy consumption and costs, but also enhance the visual comfort and productivity of occupants. Whether you are looking to install new equipment, replace old equipment, or upgrade a working system, Mass Save provides technical assistance and incentives to help optimize your energy efficiency investment.

Custom Measures- Large Retrofit and New Construction or renovation projects

Custom incentives are available for more complex or one-of-a-kind measures that don’t quite fit into the standard incentive plans offered for large retrofit or new construction/renovation projects. A proposed project must be submitted to your Program Administrator before beginning the application process to determine eligibility and establish requirements for detailed projects and cost estimates.

Small and Midsize Business- Direct Install

The Direct Install program is available to business customers in Massachusetts that are customers of the following Program Administrators:

Berkshire Gas
Cape Light Compact
Columbia Gas of Massachusetts
Eversource
National Grid
Liberty Utilities
Unitil

This program offers a free energy assessment to identify energy savings opportunities to help businesses lower monthly energy bills and receive reimbursement up to 70% of the cost of equipment and installation. Mass Save makes this easy by having a qualified contractor handle the entire process, including the free on-site energy assessment, customized offer sheet details with recommendations, installation of new equipment and removal of old fluorescent lights and ballasts.

There are several projects and equipment that may qualify for the Direct Install program, including LED exit signs and LED lighting upgrades for walk-in cooler/refrigeration.

New Construction/Major Renovation & Large Retrofit Incentives

The following performance lighting incentivesare available to business customers in Massachusetts that are customers of the following Program Administrators:

Cape Light Compact
National Grid
Eversource
Unitil

Performance Lighting-
Performance lighting incentives encourage customers to install High Performance lighting equipment that uses less energy than the code mandated Lighting Power Density (LPD watts/square foot) in new or existing commercial, industrial, institutional, educational, or municipal buildings.

Requirements:

-Minimum 10% reduction in Lighting Power Density LPD (watts/sq.ft. and/or watts/linear ft.) better than mandated energy code
-Qualified LED products listed by Energy Star or the Design Lights Consortium (DLC) must represent 50% or more of the connected load**
-Code compliant lighting controls required

Area Category

Incentive $ above 10% minimum reduction

Interior (watts per sq.ft.)

$2.00 per watt saved

Exterior (watts per sq.ft. or linear ft.)

$1.00 per watt saved

Lighting and Lighting Controls- Mass Save offers incentives for a variety of lighting control technologies, including occupancy sensors and daylight harvesting systems. These networked lighting control systems maximize flexibility, comfort, and aesthetic, while generating significant savings. Incentives are available for more than two dozen types of lighting products, including:

-Daylight dimming systems
-Occupancy controlled step-dimming systems
-High Bay occupancy Control systems
-Wall-Mounted Occupancy Sensors
-Photocell sensors
-Wall-Mounted Vacancy Occupancy Sensores
-Remote mounted occupancy sensors

PERFORMANCE LIGHTING with Smart LED Interior Fixtures with Integral Controls:

-80% of the connected load are Smart LED Interior Fixtures with integral occupancy and photocell sensors that are wirelessly configurable and adapt to use patterns. These systems require a remote control or a phone app to initialize, configure and commission. Eligible fixtures must meet DLC Technical Requirements

-Exterior fixtures must have built-in occupancy sensors and bi-level dimming (100% to 20% or OFF for unoccupied times), photocell or astronomical time-clock for dusk to dawn operation.

Area Category

Incentive $ above 10% minimum reduction

Interior (watts per sq.ft.)

$3.00 per watt saved

Exterior (watts per sq.ft. or linear ft.)

$2.00 per watt saved

PERFORMANCE LIGHTING with a Networked Lighting Control System:

-80% of the connected load for the qualified space utilizes a Networked Lighting Control system as defined by the DLC. (Documentation can be found on the DLC website at http://www.designlights.org/content/CALC/SpecificationAndQPL. See Qualified Products List and Project Requirements to learn which products have been qualified and what requirements must be fulfilled to participate.

-Supplemental Requirements:
Lighting Control System specification including control narrative
Certification that Networked Lighting Control System meets all required performance criteria as listed on DLC’s Qualified Products List, including:

-Networked communication between Luminaires and Devices
-Zoning
-Occupancy Sensing
-High‐End Trim, also known as Task‐Tuning
-Daylight Harvesting
-Continuous Dimming

-Certification that Networked Lighting Control System includes Energy Monitoring. To qualify for Incentives, Customers must commission the NLC system, and provide an initial 30 days of reported kWh saved and six months of lighting energy use data as reported by the system post‐ installation. A retainage amount equal to 20% of the approved incentive will be applied until the data is accepted.

-Exterior Lighting Controls must include the following:

-Scheduling Astronomical Timer
-High-End Trim
-Photocell Dusk to Dawn Sensor
-Network Communication between Luminaires
-Bi-Level Scheduled Dimming
-Addressability for Grouping and Diagnostics
-Bi-Level Occupancy Sensor
-Energy Monitoring

Area Category

Incentive $ above 10% minimum reduction

Interior (watts per sq.ft.)

$4.00 per watt saved

Exterior (watts per sq.ft. or linear ft.)

$3.00 per watt saved
